Google is literally a lifesaver for us here in China. It is the best Chinese translator app to use in my opinion because it was so user-friendly.
Download the app before visiting China but also download the Chinese translations as you won’t be able to use the app live without having a VPN on. Google is one of those websites that is banned here in China.
One of the best tools for the translate app is the camera icon; you can click on this and hover your phone camera over a menu, sign or anything with Chinese characters and it will translate it for you. We have managed to avoid ordering pig intestines or duck neck by using this helpful tool!

This is super helpful! I will be in China (only for transit, I have a 16-hour layover) in December but I’m wanting to get out and explore Shanghai. These apps will definitely come in handy!
Yeah these are so helpful! Didi is a must if you are short on time.
Have a great time in Shanghai! I would suggest you head to The Bund for that iconic view of Shanghai. Not too far of a walk from the bund is Nanjing Pedestrian street where you can find lots of shops but also some street food vendors!
Wow… China made easy… Too handy blog… ❤️❤️❤️
the best info ever !!
Very helpful!
Some excellent advice here. I travelled to China a lot in my previous job. On my first visit I didn’t have a VPN set up – didn’t make that mistake again! I also conducted business and travel arrangements almost entirely on WeChat while I was there.
This is so handy to know. A lot of my students refer to these things so it is nice to learn what they are and what they do!
I have used the China skill app! WeChat is a great recommendation, many employers and friends in China are bound to use it
Some of these look super useful thanks
This is an amazing post and guide to survive in China. Because we are not allowed to use Facebook and Instagram and a lot of the social content are blocks. This would really help us tourist!
Informative article and this post has inspired me to prepare a similar list for my country too 🙂
Did you get a foreign credit card to work on WeChat?
It doesn’t directly work, you can attach a foreign card and then use it to top up your wallet in the WeChat app.
