Where to stay in Chengdu if you want to see the Pandas? Sam’s Guesthouse Review

Where to stay in Chengdu, China?

Whilst visiting Chengdu – China, we spent 2 nights at Sam’s Guesthouse. A small but comfortable guesthouse set in an authentic, rustic Chinese courtyard. The rooms are basic but for 356 CNY for two nights, it is great value for money.

What made this place memorable for us was the excellent service of the family running the guesthouse. The elderly gentleman that collected us from the airport spoke little English and we are still unsure whether his name was actually Trevor or he was just saying driver in a very strong Chinese accent. He drove us to the Giant Panda Base then the Leshan Buddha and was such a gentleman, he is a real credit to the guesthouse.

His daughters worked in the guesthouse office and organised our tours and train ticket to Chonquing whilst also walking us to a local pharmacy and translating to the shop owner the need for a cream to reduce my ever-swelling horse fly bite which I must have got whilst at the Panda Base.

The guesthouse also features a small restaurant open during the day with a menu that included both Chinese and International food. They stayed open until late for us, knowing we would return after most restaurants and shops nearby had closed (places close early in Chengdu).

Sam’s Guesthouse was a real pleasure to stay at, made so special by the owners and staff.
