Knowing what to wear on a Caribbean cruise is half the battle when planning a cruise; we share what to wear, what to bring and what to leave behind.

A Caribbean cruise is an exciting adventure, offering the chance to explore tropical islands, enjoy warm weather, and experience a variety of activities both on and off the ship. Whether you’re stopping by Cozumel, CoCoCay or St. Thomas, there are plenty of beautiful places to enjoy and explore.

However, what you pack and what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise is very different to other cruises. You may need your layers for Alaska or Norway cruises, but not for these! So let’s get stuck in!

What to wear on a Caribbean Cruise

Understanding the Climate and Dress Code

The Caribbean is known for its warm, sunny weather, with daytime temperatures often ranging between 75°F and 85°F (24°C to 29°C). However, evenings can be breezy, and indoor spaces may be air-conditioned, requiring light layers; think cardigans and hoodies.

Additionally, cruise ships typically have dress codes ranging from casual to formal, depending on the setting or event.

• Daytime Attire: Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal for sunny days and shore excursions.
• Evening Attire: Some nights may be casual, while others may require formalwear, depending on your cruise line.
• Excursion-Specific: Water sports, hiking, or exploring historical sites may require specific attire.

We break down each of these settings and events, to give you an idea of what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise.

Daytime Wear on the Ship

When looking at what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise, first we need to start with daytime wear.

During the day, most ships have a relaxed, casual environment; you can expect to see people lounging by the pool, joining in with onboard activities like games, archery or mini golf, or enjoying a buffet breakfast.

Poolside Outfits

• Swimsuits: Pack 2-3 swimsuits. Bikinis, tankinis, or one-piece swimsuits work well. For men, swim trunks or board shorts are ideal.
• Cover-Ups: A sarong, kaftan, or lightweight tunic allows you to transition seamlessly from the pool to other areas of the ship. If you plan on having a full day by the pool (whether on the ship or off), you will want something to pop over your swimsuit for those trips to the cafes, coffee shops or buffet. 
• Flip-Flops or Pool Slides: We always bring a pair or two of flip flops. These are comfortable and easy to slip on when heading to the pool deck and getting in and out of the pool.

Casual Daywear

• Tops: Lightweight tank tops, t-shirts, or flowy blouses made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
• Bottoms: Shorts, skirts, or capri pants are perfect for warm weather. Men can opt for casual shorts or lightweight chinos.
• Dresses: Sundresses or maxi dresses are versatile for daytime activities and my favourite thing to wear on a cruise. I bring short leggings to wear under dresses, especially if I am doing a lot of walking. It is also worth bringing a pair of tights or long leggings, for any cooler days or travel days. 
• Shoes: Comfortable sandals or sneakers are needed for walking around the ship. These ships can be huge and it is easy to underestimate the amount of walking you might do. 

Evening Wear

Evenings aboard a Caribbean cruise often have specific dress codes, ranging from casual to formal, so take this into account when deciding what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise.

Review your cruise line’s policies to pack accordingly, especially as some cruise lines will have themed days; like Virgin Voyages have a Scarlet night and Disney Cruises have a Pirate’s night. 

Casual Evenings

• For Women: Sundresses, maxi dresses, or a blouse paired with skirts, slacks, or stylish shorts are ideal. I tend to pack plenty of sundresses as these are versatile and can be used for day and nightwear, ideal if you are unsure what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise.
• For Men: Collared shirts, polo shirts, and lightweight chinos or khakis are ideal. Avoid long trousers or jeans, as these can be too hot in the Caribbean.
• Footwear: Pack comfortable flats, sandals, or casual loafers. You could pack and wear heels but if so, I recommend wedges or block heels, rather than stilettos. These aren’t great choices as the boat can sway a lot and poolside areas can be slippery. 

Smart Casual

Some evenings call for slightly dressier attire, usually for dinner or onboard shows.

• For Women: Cocktail dresses, skirts with elegant blouses, or dressy jumpsuits.
• For Men: Button-down shirts or polos paired with dress pants or tailored shorts.
• Footwear: Heels, wedges, or dressy flats for women; loafers or polished shoes for men.

Formal Nights

Many cruise lines host formal or gala evenings, offering a chance to dress up.

• For Women: Long evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or stylish pantsuits. Sequins, lace, or satin fabrics add elegance.
• For Men: Suits, tuxedos, or dress shirts with ties or bowties. A dark blazer and dress pants also work.

Shore Excursions Attire

Caribbean shore excursions vary widely, from lounging on pristine beaches to exploring lush rainforests or snorkelling in turquoise waters. Make sure to dress appropriately for your chosen activities and read details on any excursions, as they often have suggestions too. When planning what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise, this is often the part that is overlooked but so important!

Beach Days

• Swimsuits: Wear a swimsuit under casual clothing for quick changes.
• Cover-Ups: A lightweight dress, kaftan, or shirt over your swimsuit is also a great choice for resort days.
• Footwear: Flip-flops or water shoes for walking on sandy or rocky beaches. 
• Accessories: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and a lightweight beach tote. The Caribbean is hot with a high UV number, so if you are prone to burning like my husband, put a layer of sunscreen on the night before a day on the beach and keep layering up during your visit. 

Adventure Excursions

For activities like hiking, zip-lining, or ATV rides:

• Activewear: Moisture-wicking tops, athletic shorts, or leggings.
• Footwear: Sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes.
• Layering: A lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker in case of sudden rain.
• Sprays: Sunscreen is a must but also pack some mosquito spray; especially for any jungle excursions. 

City and Cultural Tours

If you’re visiting towns, historical landmarks, or cultural sites:

• Comfortable Attire: Lightweight dresses, shorts with collared shirts, or breathable pants.
• Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good support and comfortable sneaker socks. 
• Modest Options: Some religious or cultural sites may require covered shoulders or knees, so pack a light scarf to place over your shoulders and wear knee length or maxi dresses. 

Specialty Theme Nights

When planning what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise, you must think about the themed, special nights your cruise may offer.

Many cruises include themed events, such as tropical parties or white nights. These are fun opportunities to dress up and participate in unique activities.

• For Women: Floral sundresses, bright-colored tops, or tropical-print rompers.
• For Men: Hawaiian shirts, light linen pants, or khaki shorts.
• Accessories: Lei necklaces or tropical hats.

White Nights

• All-White Attire: Women can wear white dresses or jumpsuits, and men can opt for white shirts paired with light-colored pants.

What to pack on a Caribbean Cruise?

Now we have looked at what to wear on a Caribbean cruise, here are a few things to pack and bring on your cruise as well:

Make sure you have the necessary travel documents; these are vital for boarding the ship, navigating ports, and returning home smoothly.

• Passport and Visa: A passport is mandatory for most cruises. Check if a visa is required for any of your destinations.
• Cruise Documents: Print your cruise tickets, boarding passes, and itinerary.
• Travel Insurance: Bring a copy of your policy in case of emergencies.
• Credit Cards and Cash: Bring a mix of U.S. dollars and small bills for tipping or local currency for ports.
• ID and Driver’s Licence: These may be needed for excursions or car rentals.
• Port Maps and Travel Guidebooks: Useful for exploring independently.

2. Pool Gear

Obviously we have covered what to wear on pool days but here are a few extras you may want to pack.

• Beach Towel: While most cruise lines provide towels, having a personal one can be handy, especially when exploring beaches on excursion days.
• Snorkeling Gear: If you prefer to use your own equipment instead of renting at excursions, these are a must if you are visiting Punta Cana or other popular diving spots in the Caribbean. 
• Waterproof Bag: Perfect for protecting electronics and valuables at the beach.
• Sunscreen: Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and marine life.
• Sunglasses and Hats: Wide-brimmed hats and UV-protection sunglasses are essential for sun protection.

3. Toiletries and Personal Care Items

Cruise ship cabins often come with basic toiletries, but bringing your favorites ensures you’re fully prepared.

• Shampoo and Conditioner: Travel-sized bottles if you prefer your own over the ship’s offerings.
• Sunscreen and After-Sun Lotion: Essential for protecting and soothing sun-exposed skin.
• Bug Spray: Necessary for some island excursions where mosquitos are prevalent.
• Makeup and Skincare: A minimal kit for evening events, along with hydrating skincare products.
• Toothbrush and Toothpaste: Travel-sized versions fit easily in your bag.
• Hair Care Tools: A travel-sized hairdryer or flat iron, as cruise cabins may have limited amenities.
• Razor and Shaving Cream: For personal grooming during the trip.

A few things to keep us healthy and well on our cruise:

• Prescription Medications: Bring enough for the entire trip and a few extra days in case of delays.
• Motion Sickness Remedies: Consider over-the-counter options like Dramamine, Seabands, or ginger chews. I personally love the seabands, they work every time!
• First-Aid Kit: Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any other basic supplies.
• Allergy Medications: Antihistamines for unexpected allergic reactions.
• Hand Sanitizer and Wipes: Convenient for keeping hands clean while travelling.

5. Technology and Entertainment

Technology isn’t massively needed for cruises, especially as wi-fi is limited and at an extra cost. However, here are few things you may want to bring:

• Smartphone and Charger: Useful for capturing memories, staying connected, and using the cruise apps.
• Portable Power Bank: To keep devices charged during excursions, pick up a portable power bank. These can be life savers during long excursion days but also great for busy sea days. 
• Camera: For high-quality photos of the stunning Caribbean landscapes, bring a decent camera. We prefer smaller point-and-shoot cameras for cruises but a DSLR can be a good choice for keen photographers. 
• E-Reader or Book: Relax with a good read during sea days, we love lounging by the pool, listening to some music and/or reading a good book. 
• Headphones/airpods: For listening to music or podcasts.
• Adapters and Converters: Check if the ship uses standard U.S. outlets or requires specific adapters.
• Waterproof Phone Case: Protect your phone during beach or water activities.

6. Excursion-Specific Items

Depending on the types of activities you plan to enjoy, you may need some additional items.

• Backpack or Day Bag: Lightweight and roomy enough for essentials during excursions.
• Binoculars: Ideal for spotting marine life or enjoying scenic views from the ship.
• Underwater Camera: For capturing memories while snorkelling or scuba diving.
• Travel Umbrella or Poncho: Be prepared for sudden rain showers.

7.  Food and Snacks

While cruises offer abundant food options, bringing a few snacks can be helpful for excursions or those evening snacks! I always need some of my favourite chocolate during a 7-day cruise for example.

• Non-Perishable Snacks: Granola bars, nuts, or dried fruit for long days onshore.
• Reusable Water Bottle: Many cruise lines allow you to refill bottles at water stations.
• Alcohol: Some cruises allow a certain amount of beverages, including alcohol. If you want to save money on cruises, this can be a great way to save on onboard purchases.
